What are compound words?

Compound words are formed when two small words are combined to make a new, larger word.

The new word formed is called a compound word.

Here is a list of some common compound words plus the words that create the larger word.

air + plane = airplane
back + pack = backpack
butter + fly = butterfly
door + knob = doorknob
fire + fly = firefly
hair + cut = haircut
green + house = greenhouse
life + guard = lifeguard
moon + light = moonlight
snow + flake = snowflake

Working on Compound Words

Before having children work on worksheets, introduce the concept of compound words with some interactive activities.

I like to write two small words on index cards and have children match the cards. They can then share the compound word that is created.

You can extend this activity by hiding the cards are the room and having children go on a word hunt.

They can record their compound words on a whiteboard for practice after they find the cards.

Or, give each student a card and have them find a partner that will help them form a compound word.

You might also encourage children to go on a compound word hunt in their favorite book. They can record the words they find to share with the class.
