Trigraphs are three letters that work together to form a single sound. The letters these word cards focus on will come at the beginning of words.

The trigraphs included in this set are scr, shr, spl, spr, squ, str and thr.

You will find words such as square, scratch, splash and throat.

Practice with Beginning Trigraph Words

Looking for a way to practice these beginning trigraph words before using paper and pencil? You might start by encouraging your children to go on a word hunt in a favorite book.

Each child can pick a favorite story and you can make a list of the words you find. For a challenge, students can also search for words with trigraphs in the middle or the end of words.

This will be an easy activity to add to a phonics lesson during a virtual class meetings.
