What are trigraphs?

This flashcard set can be a great resource for teaching trigraphs in first and second grades.

Trigraphs are three letters that work together to form a single sound. The letters these word cards focus on will come at the beginning of words.

Examples of words beginning with trigraphs are square, straw and scrape.

Using these beginning trigraph flashcards

You will find these beginning trigraph flashcards in four formats.

The download includes:

  • each trigraph on a card
  • a picture for each trigraph on a card
  • a trigraph next to a picture on a card
  • a word containing the trigraph on a card

Some ideas for using these cards include:

Begin with the cards containing the trigraph and picture on one card. Continue by saying the name of the picture and then saying the trigraph sound.

Have your child name the picture on the card. They can then identify the trigraph they hear at the beginning. You might then have your child write the letters on a whiteboard so that they are matching the letters with the sound.

Once your child has mastered this task, they can try reading the trigraph without the picture clues. You might ask them to make a list of words they know beginning with the trigraphs.

These cards can also be used as a matching activity. Have your child match the trigraph letters with the picture. Extend the activity by playing a go fish style game or a memory game with these cards.
