What are vowel blends?
Vowel blends, also known as vowel teams, are a pair of letters that make a single vowel sound.
Most of the time, the letters make a long vowel sound. There are some exceptions to this, such as the “ea” in bread working together to make a short e sound. All of the vowel teams in this clip card download make long vowel sounds.
Vowel teams include:
- ai as you see in sail, mail
- ea as you see in dream, team
- ee as you see in need, tree
- ey as you see in money, key
- ay as you see in stay, day
- oe as you see in toe, Joe
- ue as you see in glue, blue
- ie as you see in tie, pie
- oa as you see in boat, goat
- ui as you see in juice, fruit
