Hard and Soft C & G words can be tricky because they require more than simply sounding out a word. Students need to determine which sound each letter makes in the word.

Most often, students will hear the hard sounds of c and g. When the c or g is followed by an i, e or y, the c or g will make a soft sound. The soft c sound is like an s. The soft g sound is like a j.

Practicing Words with Hard and Soft C & G

Students can practice these sounds by making a list of words belonging in each category. They can hunt for these words in a favorite book, search their house for objects. Or, they could work in groups to brainstorm a list together.

You might make an anchor chart where students can add words they find on a class list. This might motivate students to find more words.

When creating these pages, my goal was to provide you with pages that will engage students. Many of the pages include mazes or other small activities to add a little fun for children.

The engagement piece can be especially helpful during a time of distance learning! Parents will appreciate the little extra these pages provide.
