What are diphthongs?
Diphthongs are a phonics skill students can work on after they have mastered single letter sounds.
They are two letters that work together to glide from one sound to another. They are not the same as long vowel sounds because while the letters do not make a short vowel sound, the sound they make is different than the name of each vowel.
The word diphthong is a Greek word that actually means two voices or two sounds.
The diphthongs are ew, oi, oo, ou, ow, oy, au and aw.
Using these diphthong flashcards
You will find these beginning blend flashcards in three formats.
The download includes:
- each diphthong on a card
- a word containing the diphthong on a card
- a picture for each diphthong on a card
- a blend next to a diphthong on a card
Some ideas for using these cards include:
Begin with the cards containing the diphthong and picture on one card. Continue by saying the name of the picture and then saying the blend sound.
Have your child name the picture on the card. They can then identify the diphthong they hear at the beginning. You might then have your child write the letters on a whiteboard so that they are matching the letters with the sound.
Once your child has mastered this task, they can try reading the diphthong without the picture clues. You might ask them to make a list of words they know beginning with the diphthong.
These cards can also be used as a matching activity. Have your child match the diphthong letters with the picture. Extend the activity by playing a go fish style game or a memory game with these cards.
