What are CVCe Words?

CVCe words are words that contain a consonant, vowel, another consonant and end with a silent e. The magic e at the end makes the other vowel say its name.

If you are beginning with phonics instruction, begin with CVC words and then move on to CVCe words.

To practice without pencil and paper, you might give your child a CVCe word like cake. They will then tell you words they can think of that end in -ake. They might name rake, bake or take. If they share a word that is not a real word, be sure to ask them if the word they names is a real or nonsense word.
