Using these materials

In my classroom, I began by copying the vocabulary cards onto card stock. I made multiple sets, each was copied onto a different color. This made it easy to sort the sets when they were accidentally mixed up.

After laminating, I cut apart the cards and mixed them up. As an introduction to the topic, I gave students the words and definitions. I did not let students use their ipads or any other materials. Many times, students are able to use clues within the set to help them match the cards correctly. I have found that this helps some of the new words stick. I like that students have to think through the matching rather than just looking at a definition in a science book. This process also requires students to discuss their reasoning and interact with classmates.

Once students have finished, I check their matches to make sure they are correct. If students have mixed some up, we talk through matching them correctly.

I like to discuss the words as a whole class before they record their definitions. When they are ready to record the definition and add a picture, I emphasize that they should be using their own words. I find that they have a better understanding of the meanings if they are able to do more than just copy what the card says.

Along with a page for students to write their own defintions, I have a page that contains fill in the blank definitions. These were very helpful for my students learning English this year. It gave them a little help.
