About these pages

It can be challenging to find time for students to learn and practice cursive in the classroom. One way to help students receive this practice time is to incorporate it into other areas of study.

These pages give students exposure to vocabulary related to photosynthesis while also providing practice with cursive.

I know that cursive is not a required standard in most parts of the country. However, I am seeing more research sharing the benefits of students learning and using cursive in their lives. Because of this, I am trying to find some ways to sneak in a little cursive practice.

I have found that there are many students who are motivated by the idea of learning cursive. When I was testing out this set in my classroom, I had many children who voluntarily completed the page even though it was not required.

Along with the practice with cursive, students will also be looking at word parts. There are vocabulary words along with a break down of the root words found within many of these words.

Photosynthesis

These pages included the following information to help students learn about photosynthesis:

  • chloroplast = chloros (green) + pastes (formed or molded)
  • microorganism = micro (small) + organism (living thing)
  • epidermis = epi (on) + derma (skin)
  • glycolysis = glycol (sugar) + lysis (splitting_
  • photosynthesis = photo (light) + synthesis (combine)
  • respiration = re (again) + spirare (to breathe)
  • Photosynthesis requires the reactants carbon dioxide and water.
  • Oxygen and glucose are the products of photosynthesis.
