Word Building with Geography Vocabulary

Geography word building activity for word work practice

How to create your activity

Begin by printing the letter pages on cardstock. I like to print each set of letters I will use on different colors of paper. This makes it easier when letters accidentally get mixed up.

After printing on cardstock, laminate the pages and cut them apart.

I like to make multiple sets of the same letters so that all groups in the class have the same letters.

Then, each group will use their letter tiles to form as many words as they can. Depending on the age and ability of the groups I am working with, I adjust the scoring. For my sixth grade students, they only get points for words that are five letters or more. Second and third grade students might earn points for three and four letter words.

Give students 5 -10 minutes to create as many words as they can. I have them make their list on a piece of lined paper. I have also included recording pages for you to use if you would like.

When time is up, collect the pages and begin totaling the points. The group with the most points is the winner.

This set includes the following words:

  • continents
  • latitude
  • longitude
  • mountains
  • archipelago
  • hemisphere
